Review / The Lockwood Chronicles: Episode 4: Origins

Over 900 years ago, Alexander Lockwood was just Alexander, a soldier, hoping to one day have sons to carry on his name. He didn’t expect anything beyond that as he spent his days training and his nights carousing with the other soldiers. But then he met her—and then he died. And nothing was ever the same for him again.

Madeline Lockwood had always thought that her family was ordinary. When she met Alexander, she was swept into a world that she’d only ever read about in books and saw in movies. She’d assumed that it was all a happy coincidence, his changing her world and taking her out of the ordinary.

But Madeline and Alexander had a connection that went back centuries. Perhaps their meeting in that airport was not an accident, but fate’s way of bringing together two people who’d always been destined to meet. And if it hadn’t been for one woman, the link they’d never known about, they would never have met.

I’ve always been a big reader. As a matter of fact, I’m told that I was already reading before I even started kindergarten—little things, of course, not Shakespeare. Over the years, I breezed through any writing assignment given to me, and even began to write on my own some during grade school. It was in high school, though, that I really began to get serious.

From the start I gravitated toward science fiction and fantasy stories. They were pretty tame and very adolescent, but I had a lot of fun writing them. I was reading books like Dune by Frank Herbert at the time, so most of what I wrote centered around outer space. It wasn’t until I started writing about vampires that I began to realistically think that I could write for a living. I read a book called The Initiation that was about vampires. The part I remember best was at the end, when the girl, who’d been turned into a vampire, allowed herself to die in the first rays of dawn rather than feed on the boy she loved. I remember that so vividly because I thought it was the most beautiful depiction of unconditional and unrequited love that I'd ever read (hey, I was a teenager, what did I know?). I immediately looked for more books like it but the selections were limited. All I could usually find were goofy stories for little kids or sappy romances for adults. I wasn’t really interested in any of those, so I thought to myself: Why don’t I write one?

Over the years, my vampires have grown and evolved with me, and now I write those ‘sappy’ romances I used to sneer about. Oh well, I’m a sappy grown-up I guess. I’ve tried writing stories more for teens, but I’ve discovered that if I try to control my characters too much, they rebel and the story becomes stagnant and boring, so I go with the flow.

When my web designer told me I was going to have to write something for her to put on an “about me” page, I cringed, and I will admit I got a little nervous. I’m a pretty solid believer in not putting too much information about yourself online, but then I realized that with any story of mine that anyone reads, they learn a little more about me. Nearly every female character that has ever allowed me to write her story has more than a trait or two borrowed from me (and no, I won’t tell you which characters, or which traits). So, ‘about me’…. Suffice it to say that, I have been in a serious relationship with the same man for more than twenty years, and so far I haven’t found a reason to ruin that with marriage. We have a geriatric dog named Sandy who thinks she’s still a puppy. I work a full-time job because I don’t want to starve to death or live in my car. And I write every chance I get.

My Review:

I fell in love with this series of short stories a few months back when I read the first Lockwood Episode ~ A Chance Meeting.  Katrina keeps the action going, building up suspense.  You're guessing what will happen next, and so anxious to see it that you find yourself reading while cooking and folding laundry...or in my case, taking my phone into the store and reading while shopping.  It took me longer to get the groceries I needed and I'm sure my husband wanted to choke me but I couldn't put this down.

The world that Katrina has created is one that I could get lost in for hours.  The descriptions really show and tell the story.  The characters are not flawless and unbelievable, I can relate to them in some form or another.

I have watched Madeline and Alexander blossom, their relationship has been a fun journey thus far.

Madeline receives boxes full of her grandmother's belongings.  Inside one of the boxes she finds a key, so to speak, that unlocks all of the mysteries of her family's history.  She thought that meeting Alexander and becoming a vampire was something only found in fictional books, now she learns that there is so much more to this new paranormal world.  Not only does her view of the paranormal world expand, she learns that her family and Alexander go back centuries.

I cannot wait to read the next episode.  I'm completely hooked.

These episodes are for the mature audience.

Pyxi Rose's Taghairm Chronicles Blog Tour

Welcome to our stop on Pyxi Rose's Taghairm Chronicles Bog Tour! Today we are sharing an excerpt from the book. Enjoy!
Excerpt: (Talula’s POV)
He sighed and started to pace. I watched him intently, this beautiful, amazing creature in my living room. He awakened things in me that I thought I wasn’t allowed to feel with my cursed soul. A vicious yearning rumbled deep in my chest as I watched him wear a path in my hardwood floors. And suddenly he stopped to face me, eyes aglow, as a smile lit his flawless face.
“Yes?” I asked amused at how impossible this all was. The yearning, the unmistakable burn I haven’t felt since Aeron. And that need was growing stronger by the minute as I held his gaze. I quickly turned away, afraid my face would give me away instantly. Looking down at my arms, I could see my blush slowly spread over my whole body.
“How did you do it?” He asked, fangs growing slightly in anticipation. Confusion washed over me, tapering the lust back slightly.
“Do what?” I asked, downing my wine and setting the empty glass on the bar.
“Kill this monster . . .” His voice quiet; his dark eyes now focused on me. My face had to be the color of my wine by now. I was dizzy suddenly not understanding why he would want that knowledge.
“Does it really matter? I killed him in a matter in which he deserved,” I answered shrugging, but I could see my answer wasn’t what he was after.
Pouring the last of the wine in my glass, I made my way back to the couch. We sat in silence as he gathered his thoughts. My thoughts were only of him though. Finally he broke the silence.
“I ask you because if I could find some common sin between us, then maybe I could finally . . .” His voice trailed off, as he knelt at my feet. I now understood why he needed to know my darkness.
“Feel less of a monster?” I finished for him as tears pooled in his eyes. I gently wiped them away.
“Gadin, all souls sin. Without those mistakes life would be unbearably boring, huh?” I smiled lovingly and he returned the gesture. And suddenly his lips were on mine. The passion I felt earlier returned and spread like a wild fire all over my body. Gasping between kisses, we tumbled to the floor in a tangled mess. Pushing and pulling together clumsily, desperate to get closer to one another. He scooped me up to move to the couch but in the process of his eagerness, he knocked my wine glass to the floor. The sudden sound of glass breaking brought us both back to earth. We stared at the shattered glass as if we were seeing it for the first time.
“This is wrong, Talula,” He whispered as he pulled away from me.
My heart was pounding, still running on that delicious wave of warmth.
“Gadin, this is so far from wrong,” I begged, my voice shaky. The tears were already filling my eyes in mourning of our broken embrace. This can’t be the end of that wonderful sensation of heat. The one sense this body lacked. This can’t be the end of something that hadn’t even had a chance to begin. I looked over to see his beautiful face mirroring my conflicting emotions. I knew the want was still there but he had reined it in. I sighed loudly in exasperated disappointment.
“I haven’t felt anything like this in a very long time. I didn’t think I was capable of it in this body. But when you touch me . . . it’s like a jolt of electricity shocking me awake from a long slumber. It’s like someone has lit a match underneath my skin, all heat and absolutely no pain. I can’t explain it, but all I know is that I want it. No, I need it, Gadin,” I pleaded with him, desperate to drown in this overwhelming sensory overload. He sat there on the other end of the couch silently. Maybe I imagined the need in his eyes; maybe I just wished it so. I sighed suddenly feeling drained and wounded. I got up and started to clean the broken mess on the floor, tears blurring my vision.
“I’m sorr-Shit!” I had started but sliced my hand wide open on the broken glass, blood pooling in the mix of spilt wine and pieces of glass. Everything stilled as Gadin caught my scent and a low growl escaped from his lips. Any self-control he had exhibited before was now gone. I got my wish. I was now the prey.

The Ninth Taghairm: Redemption

Book One of the Taghairm Chronicles

There are far worse fates than death, but that is a truth Gadin Wilde knows all too well. He had to come to terms with his immortality from a sire that relished in the kill. He had eventually grown to accept the fact he was one of the damned; a vampire, an irredeemable beast driven by blood and blood alone. That was until he met the very complicated and alluring Talula Delphina and was shown another way of existing. In a blink of an eye, his whole world changed.
Cursed with a fate worse than death, Talula is destined to watch the world die. Punished with the cruelest form of immortality, she knows all about the devastation of death and the agonizing pain of rebirth. For almost thirteen hundred years, she has relived its vicious cycle time and time again. For a crime of retribution, her soul bares the mark of immortality, but suffers it in a mortal shell.
So when the dark and sensual, Gadin began hunting her, she welcomed the prospect of being his prey. After all, there are far worse ways to die. But nothing could have prepared her for the fire he lit within her.
And as their passions grow more intense, powerful forces fight to keep them apart. Will their love be enough to overcome their fated paths? Or will the secret crime Talula committed centuries ago, be so damning that Gadin won't be able to forgive her?

Review / The Dark Legion by Stella Samiotou-Fitzsimons

They have waited for her all these years, even before she was born. She lives hidden from their vulture-like drones, hidden in the dark, cavernous lair of her enemies.

The unseen ones will come for her. They must come for her. Their very existence depends on finding her, the girl with the gift of light, of power, of life.

Haunted by a past she does not understand, by a destiny they plan for her, Freya must leave the Saviors behind, leave Damian and Finn, leave even little Pip and embark on a perilous journey with a beastly warrior.

She will venture out beyond the ends of the charted lands, risking all she holds dear to cross the dead zone to where the Dark Legion awaits.

Stella Samiotou Fitzsimons was born in Athens, Greece and lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband and two sons. After studying economics and language arts she went on to teach both Spanish and English before launching "Stella's Literary Bistro", a bilingual literary journal. My Review:

I loved the first book in this series, The Plantation, and was super excited to read this one.  The Dark Legion has more action than the first and you even see some romance forming.  I love the fact that the language is clean, for me this is a huge plus.

The Saviors are a group of kids that have escaped their plantations.  They are surviving out in the middle of nowhere, hiding from the aliens and sliman.  Terrible things happen to the ones that have been removed from the plantation, they don't want to find out what those terrible things are so they prepare themselves for war.

Freya is special, she knew that when she first activated the receptor in the battle that claimed Daphne's life.  Now a new challenge faces them.  They are approached by three sliman who claim to be their allies, aiming toward the same goal of destroying the aliens.

I was drawn to the story, to Damian in particular.  He is such a mystery.  His need to protect Freya and his desires where she is concerned.  This is a great book for teens, adults, anyone that enjoys a good science fiction, dystopian.

The Plantation #1

A century has passed since they arrived. Human history has been erased. Children are enslaved on Alien plantations. Some have heard whispers of the existence of a rebel band of humans who roam free in the forests. Most slaves dare not speak of the rebels for fear the mutant guards will grab and make an example of them.

Seventeen-year-old Freya is pulled away in the night not by the mutants, but by her old friend Finn, to join the Saviors, the mythic band of rebel teens. Her bliss fades when she discovers she is the only Savior without a special ability. She is the odd one out, slowly pushing Finn away, defying Damian, the leader of the Saviors, and antagonizing the fierce and beautiful Daphne. In her despair Freya reaches deep within to discover a dark destiny, a truth so heavy it threatens to destroy her.

Mid - Life Love by Whitney Garcia Williams

Mid Life Love by Whitney G. (Garcia Williams)

Book Description

If you'd asked me what love was two years ago, I probably would've said, 'It's this amazing feeling that obsesses and possesses you; it's what me and my husband currently have.' If you ask me that same question today, I'll say, 'Please get the hell out of my face.’

Claire Gracen's life is picture perfect. Her career as a marketing director is on the brink of being legendary, and her marriage to her high school sweetheart has never been stronger. No, wait. It has. It used to be amazing and fulfilling, but one day Claire realizes that she's been living a lie and her best friend and husband have committed the ultimate betrayal.

Broken and depressed, Claire is in need of something new—new city, new job, new friends.

When she happens to attract the interest of the sexiest man she's ever met, a man significantly younger than her, she immediately turns him down—only to later discover that this man is Jonathan Statham, self-made billionaire and CEO of Statham Industries. Her boss.

Jonathan Statham is unlike any man she's met before. He's used to getting whatever he wants—whenever he wants, and he isn't about to take no for an answer.

Sexy, unpredictable, and charmingly clever, Mid Life Love is a story that will captivate you, entertain you, and force you to fall deeply in love with the characters.

 Brenda's Review

I was given this book in ARC form, from the author herself,in return for an honest review.I am so glad that she found me on Goodreads and asked me to read her book.Other wise I would have missed out on an awesome story!! So THANK YOU WHITNEY for scoping me out.

Whitney has a way with her words to totally suck you into her stories. There's no getting out of it once your in.You won't be able to put the book down. She captivated me right from the start!I loved the characters in this story.(BTW Where's my Jonathan?)I'm tellin ya, EVERY woman needs a Jonathan in her life!

The story line is so perfect and well plotted out. I am in awe with Whitney's writing abilities. Not once did I want this story to end or roll my eyes in boredom. This story has some hot sex scenes but they are very tastfully done. It's about love and loss and betrayal, but yet a whole lot more. What's not to love about a man who will go out of his way to show his love for you. I mean, come on! The man gives her a bath and shampoos her hair for her and then takes the time to lovenly blow dry her hair for her!! (That's just HOT) Swoon Worthy this Jonathan is!! Oh and the ice cube treatment he gives her was just awesome!!But I think the best laugh I had during this story was Jonathan's Birthday Suprise!! I literally laughed my a$$ off through the whole scene! That was just BRILLANT Whitney!!

This book is a page turner!! It's a relationship that's just a HOT MESS!!I totally loved this book!! It so rocked my socks off! Even though there were many moments I wanted to shake the crap out of Claire for being so stupid!! (You'll understand when you read it)

Ok, lets talk emotions.... When an author can write a story that makes you FEEL the emotions the characters are feeling.... THAT'S CALLED EFFECTIVE WRITING!! When Claire told the story of why she was so afraid to fly.... I found myself crying and feeling her pain. That's effective writing right there!!

She hopes they will be lawfully reunited, but is prepared to defy authority and risk everything to escape the captivity of Miles County so that they can be together.

Escaping will be difficult and dangerous. Citizens are bound to their county by sophisticated chip implants that deliver shocks to those who dare to cross the electric barrier. Sydney is very clever, but her trickery is limited against the all-seeing eyes of technology. Even if they were to survive the escape, disappearing into the forgotten forests and towns of the past seems an impossible task.

What Sydney doesn't know is that she is the particular interest of two opposing forces. With deceit, fear, and warfare surrounding her—can she trust the party that aims to help with her fight against the other? Can she open her heart to receive and return unexpected love? When her sister’s life becomes jeopardized, Sydney will have to weigh a new love against the only enduring love she has known. The cost could be deadly…

How will she choose?

Suddenly, the little girl isn’t so brave. Tears overtake her small face as she buries herself in her grandmother’s lap. “You’re not going to let them take you away, are you, Grandma? You can’t leave us!” The desperate pleas of the helpless child prove to be too much for her grandmother. The tears escape her too, but she fights to hold in the anger and the revulsion in order to be strong for the sake of the child.

“I wish I could stay forever, sweetheart. I wish I could see you and your sister grow into the strong, beautiful women that I know you will become. I wish I could see your mother get healthy again.” The tears try to choke off her words, but she forces them out. “But, you see, last night was my last Friday night sleepover with you and your sister, and sweetheart,” she places her hand on the shoulder of the little girl and smiles, “it was one of the best days of my life. I get to leave this world with warm memories of baking cookies and painting flowers with my two favorite people in the world.”

“I don’t want you to go!” the child protests as her heart boils and her face floods. She pulls her grandma’s arms around her and buries her head into her chest as she begs, “Just tell them you don’t feel sick. Tell them you want to stay a little longer.” She closes her eyes tightly and wishes that it were a nightmare. But already the little girl knows better than hoping for happiness in her life. She knows there are no exceptions to the unchallengeable laws.

“I know, sweetheart, I know.” The woman strokes and kisses the distraught and fragile girl’s hair as the child clings to her tightly. A few more tears slide from her weary eyes before she finds the strength to make a final request of her beloved grandchild.

“Sydney?” She looks down to where I’m still clinging to her, not ready to come away and meet the eyes I love so much as she tells me that this is the last time I will see her. “Sydney,” she tries again, this time gently pulling my chin from her chest. “I need you to do me one last favor, okay?” My grandma can see that I can’t handle this. How can she ask me, a mere child, to let go of the one I love most, the unyielding presence in my life? Her next words seem sharper than the rest in the memory, and I never let them go.

“Sydney Harter, I know it will be hard, but you have no choice other than to be the bravest girl there ever was. You have to be brave so that you and Evvie can grow up strong. Grandpa and I, your dad, and Grandma and Grandpa Harter, want to look down on you and smile because of how proud you’ve made us.” She waits. My wails have subsided to sobs, but the pain hasn’t lessened any. “You want to make all of us proud, right honey?”

“Yes,” I reply shakily. It took so much to utter that single word because with it came the acknowledgement that I had only begun learning hardship.

“Good, sweetheart. Good girl,” she soothes. “What I need you to do is try your very hardest to take care of your sister. Be good all the time and try to help your mom when she seems sick.” Grandma’s eyes enlarge and she squeezes my hand more tightly. “Never ever tell anyone about your mom’s sickness, even if it seems like they are trying to help. Can you be a big girl and do those things for me, sweetheart?” I nod that I can, although I don’t believe it, and empty my heart in her lap for the last time.
